Poor possums

Possums are kind of cute.... they are related to kangaroos, so they have a little pouch where they carries their babies in.

I once read that when you run over a female possum (or find a recently-runover pregnant possum by the road) you might want to check its pouch to see if there are living babies in there. Otherwise they die a miserable slow death.

That advice is for ADULTS ONLY as KIDS NEED TO STAY AWAY FROM ALL WILD ANIMALS. Possums have incredibly sharp teeth and carry potentially DEADLY diseases. Even a possum that is near death can bite you and you die a few days later! KIDS: DON'T TOUCH POSSUMS, NO MATTER IF THEY ARE ALIVE OR DEAD. ALERT YOUR PARENTS WHEN YOU FIND A POSSUM!

People have rescued possum babies from the pouch and raised them feeding them milk etc. You can find the stories on the internet.

Mis-information
Posted 4/19/2006 9:13:54 AM by Matt

After reading your page information, i was stunned that you are seriously misinforming the public about opossums.
Opossums do not carry any deadly diseases. There is only one affliction that can be passed on to other mammals by the opossum, ( Horses only )
Opossums do not carry rabies.
only permited Wildlife rehabilitators should handle opossums. It is a felony in most States to have an opossum in your care without a permit. I am a permited wildlife rehabber.
